kelly's red beet factory

I have two or three three unicycles in my garage and enjoy riding them from time to time. The 28" wheel is the most fun because it's the fastest and most stable, but hard to ride on steep hills without longer crankshafts than I currently have. My 24" wheel is the most maneuverable and durable, while the 16" wheel from my little brother is just silly. I'd like to ride one of those extra-tall chain driven unicycles one day... without injuring myself hopefully. I use an air seat (a small tire tube stuffed under the rubber seat cover) to protect the family jewels and enable long distance rides and jumping curbs with ease. And no I do not juggle, for those of you wondering (probably, many of you).

It's 2009 as I write this, I don't have any newer pictures but now I'm another twelve years older and wiser than the photos below and can still ride these wheels forwards and do some idling without any problem. While I have never hit my head while riding a unicycle (I usually land on my feet), I've come close while riding backwards... I would recommend wearing a helmet for that maneuever, at least until it becomes second nature to the avid unicyclist. As for idling in mostly one place for a while (wheeling back and forth slowly, to simulate perfect balance), I say fill yer boots. I still haven't quite got that move perfected, alas it's just practice.

The photos below were taken in 1996 and 97. Enjoy!

standing with my two uni's (24 inch and 28 inch)

I still take the side roads and back alleys when I ride - less attention. I also still enjoy sipping a cup of coffee on a Sunday afternoon, while I ride my wheel. :-)

What is redbeet?

This is my retro website, a homepage that dates back to the day when the Web was still coded with text editors, well-worn keyboards, elbow grease and Unix servers... the guts all neatly hidden from sight thanks to hyperlinks.
